Blog 1 Chapter 1-Kevin

I'm glad Brown discussed the history of career development at the beginning of this chapter. The way he formatted it was very helpful as well. It is interesting how far this concept of developing your career has grown and become more important in society. Im sure the fact that more individuals are going to college and refining their skill set is a big part of this. To go to college you need to know at least a field you would like to work in. In many cases an individual needs to know exactly what job he/she would like to do when going through college. This grows the importance of developing ones career to allow them to figure this out. Now that graduate school is becoming more popular, and needed in many cases, I believe the concept of career development will continue to become a widely accepted idea of importance in the lives of today's youth.
It also was interesting how Brown introduced globalization at the beginning of this book. Between technology and other factors, we are becoming connected to everyone else in this world. This concept of globalization isn't just about social media and the internet anymore. Everything else is becoming globalized, even the concept of career development. People are discovering how important it is to learn about yourself and take what you have learned and choose a career that fits what traits that you have. Technology is allowing us to do this and reach out to many more individuals than ever before. Pearson could not have fathomed the capability of the technology like we have today. The ability to reach others across the globe and help develop their careers and learn the importance of this concept is amazing. Brown discussed events that I wouldn't have thought of as important for globalization of career development. The emergence of NAFTA showing us that a global classification system was needed to compare economic relationships between countries (Brown pg. 17). Globalization has changed the world in so many ways. We went from a world of different countries and cultures, to a world of one connected culture. I am not saying that every place in the world has the same culture, rather that we are becoming connect to each other more and more as time goes on. We must recognize this change and use it in the field of career development. I am interested to continue reading Career Information, Career Counseling, and Career Development. Career development is one of the major reasoned why I liked the school counseling career. I look forward to hearing more of what Duane Brown says about career development.
