Oops, I never actually submitted my comments on the reading for last week, I had one typed up with my general comments, but life got ahead of me and that didn't happen. This week I will post two things, just because I can.
Anyway, I was not a fan of the 3rd chapter. Personally, I'm not really enjoying readings in our book so far. Chapter one covered social justice and chapter three is about stereotypes. There are more details than just what those aspects, but it just happens that those were the take home messages in my mind. They were just things that I know are prevalent in life and that unfortunately as a school counselor we will have to work through with others. There are things that just exist and are these social constructs that have been placed on most everyone through the years of adolescence. I want to be able to help people understand that these social norms, are outdated and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. It also might just be my background of experiences, that have changed my ideas stereotypes or a believer in social justice, but the book is just not keeping me focused. I end up focused on the things I already know, and I start missing the things I don't know and should learn.
I know that the chapters have a lot of helpful information, but starting the
chapters with a brief history throws me off. I am not a history person, just
from having teachers who didn't keep my interest in learning about history. I
physically cannot convince myself to find ways to make history fun. The only
time I found history to be fun was a class on the History and Development in
Psychology. I mean the book is set up for the mass quantity of people to get
information an understanding that not everyone has the same backgrounds.
However, I did enjoy the additional reading. I found it interesting that
some schools are implementing the genograms in all school levels. I never did
one, at least not one that focused on careers and occupations. I also never
continued to do something that involved occupations throughout the different
grade levels. I think it shows that as a group, career development
practitioners, are adapting to the newer generations and ways of bettering one’s
life through their programs. That’s how I see it at least, and I know others
probably have different opinions on everything.
